Artist Statement
My love of nature is the common thread that runs through my artwork. The simple yet elegant and sometimes fragile wildflower has always taken centre stage in my paintings. Hedgerows and meadows fascinate me with their sense of freedom, unkempt and unspoiled beauty. As we move through the seasons, our countryside dramatically changes, revealing a never-ending supply of inspiration.
I have been painting in watercolour from a young age, and I describe it as my first love—a wonderful medium that, while not forgiving, allows me to capture the soft, delicate details and textures of nature. I begin by using masking fluid to protect the fine grasses, tiny flowers of Queen Anne's Lace, and dandelion seed heads. With the white of the paper preserved, I then build up layers of translucent bleeds and splashes of strong colour before removing the masking. The result is a series of meadow views that take the viewer to a place of gentle reflection.
Vibrant colours and the flexibility of acrylic make it perfect for painting expansive, colourful meadow scenes on a large scale. This medium allows me to explore bold and expressive compositions, yet I always strive to retain the delicate feel of my watercolours. Through careful layering and attention to detail, I capture the same essence and beauty that inspire me.
